Your Total Guide to Canggu with Kids

Your Total Guide to Canggu with Kids

Here at Bali Kids Guide we’ve been getting more and more questions about the family-friendlyness of Canggu. With so many things for kids popping up in the area we thought it was high time we spent some time there and formed a complete picture of where to stay, eat, and play. We didn’t manage to hit every single spot but I think we’ve done pretty well with this Complete Guide to Canggu with Kids!

Where to Stay

I always think of Canggu as being a number of different areas, all on the south side of Jalan Raya Canggu heading towards the beach. Berawa, Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Pererenen are probably the best known. Villas, guesthouses and now major hotels have increased in number exponentially over the past few years giving you a wide range of accommodation options. There are of course plenty of villas and guesthouses on the other side of Jalan Raya Canggu as well.

Canggu is well known for its rowdy nightlife so you will want to take this into account when you choose where you’re staying. We’ve tried to give you some recommended options, but also read plenty of reviews before you book to make sure you don’t end up with music shaking the windows of your villa until dawn.

Where we stay

Our last stay in Canggu was actually just on the outskirts at The Santai in Umalas. This is a great area that gives you easy access to both Canggu and Seminyak.

The Santai was the most amazing place to stay. We had a 3 bedroom villa (we only used 2 rooms) with a great kitchen, private pool, and lounge area. The rooms are luxurious but not overdone and the bathrooms absolutely massive.

The only issue you might want to consider is the sleeping arrangements as the rooms aren’t connected and the pool is outside the rooms. A pool fence can be fitted to ensure kids can not access the pool unsupervised.

Breakfast is incredible and can be eaten in your villa or in their Gong Restaurant near the reception area.

Other options:

Villa Echo Padi

This is a family fave thanks to its kid-friendly design, close proximity to the beach, and permanent pool fence. The 3 luxury villas in this complex each have 3 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, a full kitchen and dining area, private pool, garden, sun deck and private balconies.

The Apartments Canggu

If you want to settle in and feel really at home The Apartments Canggu is your spot. They offer stylish studios, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartments with either shared or private pools. Some even have kitchen facilities to make feeding or preparing bottles for little ones easy peasy.

Haven Suites Berawa

The Haven Suites Berawa is a beachfront hotel with large rooms, a huge swimming pool and an onsite restaurant. It’s not cheap but if you’re looking for a full service hotel in Canggu there aren’t so many to choose from.

The Chillhouse

Surfing families can’t go wrong with a room at The Chillhouse. Whether your kids are little or all grown up, it’s family-friendly and relaxed. Bright, airy rooms with cool murals, a social communal dining area, and young, cheery staff make this place a go-to in Canggu for active families.

Hotel Tugu

Tugu is at the upper end of the scale in Canggu price-wise but it’s also the most unique and beautiful hotel in the area. One of the very first hotels in Canggu, Tugu is packed full of antiques, carvings, paintings and cultural artifacts. The rooms are spectacular and there really is nowhere like it anywhere else in Canggu.

Where to Eat

There are almost endless chances to stuff your face in Canggu so this is probably the most difficult list to compile. However, we’ve included only the most kid-friendly so you can narrow it down to the really must-try spots while you’re in Canggu.

The Joglo

The Joglo is an absolute must for families in Canggu. The big grassy area, playground, sandpit and kids activities are brilliant for parents that need a break. The food is also healthy, fresh and well priced for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

La Casita

Delicious Peruvian food, a playground, and a cute wooden joglo setting? Yes please! La Casita also has great coffee, friendly staff and occasional kids activities.

Milk & Madu

Reopened in July 2018 after a devastating fire, Milk & Madu is again THE hangout for cool parents and kids that like long brunches, big lunches and social dinners. The playground is small but cute and there are activities for kids like arts, crafts and games every Tuesday – Sunday from 10am until 3pm.

Old Man’s

You might not immediately think of Old Man’s as a family spot, but it really does cater to people who want to have a good time without getting fall down drunk (as well as those who do). The daytime crowd is chilled, family-welcoming and usually hungry after surfing. The kids menu is great and there is a ping-pong table and room to run around for the kiddos.

The Lawn

Again, not a place you immediately think of with kids, but in the daytime or early evening there is space to play on the Lawn, a great menu and also a swimming pool. After dark it can get a bit crowded, but by then us lame old parents are ready to crash anyway.

Berawa’s Kitchen

What’s better than lots of choices when it comes to fussy eaters!? Nothing, and I know this for a fact because my son is a pain in the bum when it comes to food. Berawa Kitchen has an excellent selection of food stalls from burgers to Mexican, healthy stuff and ice cream. You will definitely find something here for everyone and if you don’t you can send them off to the playground to keep them happy while you eat.

Parachute

If your kids need room to roam, Parachute is your spot. A large grassy lawn looking out to the rice fields is perfect for brunch or lunch with little ones. It also has a really nice mix and match style daytime menu that allows you to pick exactly what the kiddos will eat. Lovely breads and pastries, diy salads, separate dips and spreads and combo plates are ideal if you have picky eaters.

Where to Play

All the above restaurants have some element of play but if you want stand-alone play places check these out.

Finn’s Recreation Club

Finn’s is a Canggu institution and we absolute love it for family time. With Splash Water Park, Strike Bowling, Bounce Trampoline Centre, Cubby House Kids Club and Finn’s Beach Club, you can’t really go wrong. There is also a spa, restaurants, gym and special events like outdoor movie nights, markets and charity functions.

We recommend a Finn’s Super Fun Pass for 2 adults and 2 children, which includes a day pass for Splash Water Park, an hour of trampolining at Bounce, an hour of bowling at Strike, and a day pass Finn’s Beach Club as well. This also includes 2 day beds at Splash and 2 at Finn’s Beach Club. For around $150 Aussie dollars we think this is a steal!

When we did the Super Fun Pass last time the kids were blissfully happy and blissfully (for us) asleep by 8pm. Just an extra bonus when you’d like a little adult time in the evening.

Amplitude Skate Park

Ok, Amplitude is technically in Kerobokan but if you have a child (or adult) skater in your family it’s worth the trip. Over 2000 square metres of obstacles, rails and pump track is insanely fun for all ages. You can even ask about skate lessons for the kids if they are just getting started.

Roar Fitness

Located at The Joglo, Roar Fitness is a great spot for parents and kids to keep active. There are twice weekly kids yoga classes Tuesday and Sunday and lots of adult classes to choose. Don’t miss the Gin Barre class that entitles you to 2-4-1 gin & tonics afterwards!

Tamora Gallery

Relatively new in Canggu, Tamora Gallery is part shopping gallery, part playground. They hold lots events that are aimed at not only keeping kids happy, but making sure parents are enjoying themselves as well. We went for Halloween and loved the mix of fun activities for kids and food and drink deals for grown ups. You can go and play in the playground there any time and there is even a teeny skate bowl at the back of the shopping area.

The Beach!

The beaches might not be white sand but kids don’t care. Berawa, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach are our favorite hang out spots and all perfect for sunset beers while the kiddos play in the sand and splash in the shallows.

Surfing

Canggu has long been a surf mecca, there are just more places to eat and stay now than a few years ago. The waves are pretty good for beginners and intermediate surfers and can get really good for experienced board riders too. If learning or getting better at surfing is something you might like to do in Canggu, get in touch with one of these surf schools.

Surf Schools:

Indasurf – http://indasurf.com/

Silver Surf – http://silversurfbali.com/

Bali Local Surf School – http://www.balilocalsurfschool.com

Where to Shop

Canggu is swamped with shops selling everything from teeny-weeny bikinis to big-boy motorbikes. If you want something more appropriate for the under 18s and over 25s you might want to pop into these shops.

Dewina

Dewina’s sweet mum & daughter matchies and light and pretty kids clothes are perfect for special occasions and gifts. Dewina specialises in high quality fabrics like beautiful linens, and boutique designers, so if you’re looking for something really unique, this is your spot.

Spellbound

There aren’t a whole lot of toy stores in Bali, but Spellbound usually comes through when we’re looking for interesting toys, books, costumes and especially birthday presents. They have a great selection of high quality classic toys, pocket money goodies and also educational toys for all ages.

Billie’s

If you love home décor, fun colours, handmade things and plenty of pineapples, flamingos, and mermaids, you’ll love Billie’s. We love the wooden dolls, gorgeous throw pillows and woven baskets in tropical colours.

Zero Waste Bali

This is an important move for Bali and we’re 100% supportive of any way we can try to keep litter off the streets and out of rivers and the sea. If you’re staying in Bali drop by to pick up some basics like rice, lentils, soap, detergent and oil. You can also get Mini Muncher baby and kid foods here as both businesses are owned by same wonderful health/eco/kid-conscious person. Just don’t forget to take some empty containers and your own shopping bag.

Love Anchor

If you love loads of choice you’ll want to stop in at Love Anchor. Their daily bazaar has everything from jewelry to home décor, and you can even have frozen yogurt and nasi Padang while you shop. I can’t think of anything better.

Getting Around

Stroller friendly Canggu is not. This means driving just about everywhere, which also means traffic jams. Motorbike is your best bet but also not recommended with kids (by me, others may disagree). It’s also often tough to Uber/Grab/GoJek thanks to a healthy taxi mafia operating in the area. Getting a reliable driver in Canggu is a good idea but failing that, negotiate with the drivers on the street. They can be tough so make sure you perfect your no thanks and walk away.

We’ve made up a handy map of most of the places on our lists. There are tons of other little roads but the main roads are marked on the map.

Family Meals Made Easy by The Pie Lady

Family Meals Made Easy by The Pie Lady

The Pie Lady pies have been a favorite in my house for ages, so we were very excited to hear she now sells family-sized meals! Nasi goreng (fried rice) has always been our go-to for non-cooking nights but now we also have the choice of a home cooked lasagne, pasta bake, pie, mac & cheese, or quiche. All of the Pie Lady’s delicious dishes are made from fresh, natural ingredients with no fillers or preservatives. The menu also checks all the boxes when it comes to feeding vegetarians, vegans, gluten free diets and also just picky little ones.

All pies and meals must be ordered 2 days in advance as all the delicious dishes are cooked to order to ensure they are fresh.

The pies are delivered by Go-Jek, which is a great app if you don’t already have it. Imagine a whole meal just turning up at your door without you having to lift a finger! Heaven sent!!

Don’t forget you can also order all the Pie Lady pies you love for those quick easy meals. Hungry kids love a pie when they get home from school or need some energy for after school sports. For a sweet treat the fruity crumbles and chocolate tarts are an absolute dream.

Paradiso Ubud: Paradise for Families

Paradiso Ubud is an absolute gem of a space in central Ubud. paradiso-3

We have spent many a rainy Sunday in their wonderful cinema space on the comfy reclining couches munching on popcorn and delicious vegetarian and vegan goodies from connected Down to Earth. Don’t be put off by the Ubud-ness of how it sounds, they have plenty of amazing things on their menu that kids love. Some of our faves are the potato wedges, Mediterranean platter for sharing and the fabulous smoothies, lassies and juices. Don’t even get me started on the raw chocolate and coconut goodies…

aae383121dc7f7f0eb776cdb6e7fa22f

Now all I can think about is the tasty food, but what great fuel it is for all the yoga, dance and other workshops they hold there! We love the regular kids acro-yoga with Noga and have had a great time at workshops like the Bali Circus, which was a special one during the 2nd annual Bali Vegan Festival.

It’s a great place to meet interesting people, connect with other families and also just hang out.
